Cyber security is an important concern for many small businesses. Although large businesses receive the most cyber threats, small and medium businesses are considered the most at risk. The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre can provide you with the resources you need to protect your business from digital threats.

Why cyber security is important

A cyber attack can compromise sensitive data, including customer information, intellectual property and company finances. Make sure that your business has the proper protections in place to reduce the likelihood of a successful cyber attack.

Protecting your business

Visit the Government of Canada for a number of resources and tips that you can use to protect your business from cyber-attacks. This includes:

  • Cyber security
  • Anti-spam legislation
  • A checklist to avoid IT security breaches
  • Statistics on cyber-crime and the impact on small businesses

Here are some general tips provided by the Government of Canada to help protect your business from spam and other online threats:

  • Train employees on how defend the company (i.e., identify spam or phishing emails)
  • Install security software on all company computers
  • Ensure computers have firewall security to block unauthorized access your computer or network
  • Secure your wireless network
  • Back up important data regularly
